Interim Executive Director
Why would an organization retain an Interim Executive Director?
The transition from a long term Executive Director is an opportunity for the organization to reflect on what its leadership has achieved, on its future goals and challenges and on the characteristics, skills and experiences of the leadership it needs to achieve those goals and meet those challenges. The organization may want to try to replicate the departing leader but it may also decide that different skills are needed for its next stages.
The transition is also a time of potential turmoil for the organization as staff, supporters and the board adjust to the loss of the relationship with the leader that had been so valuable and contemplate their own roles in the new future.
An Interim Executive Director can help the organization through this period of transition while also providing day to day management to maintain the organization.
What would be the position of the Interim Executive Director in the organization?
The Interim Executive Director would report to the board and would assume all responsibilities of Executive Director. The position may or may not be full time. The Interim would be retained as a consultant which would be a savings to the organization in fringe benefits.
Would the Interim Executive Director be a potential candidate for the position?
The Interim Executive Director would not be a candidate for the Executive Director position. This would leave the fullest possible latitude for the search process and would provide the Board and staff with the assurance that the interests of the Interim are only those of the success of the organization.
